Blades Q & A

  • What is the difference between detachable and adjustable blades ?
Detachable blades are designed to be removed from the clipper in seconds without tools while an adjustable blade is affixed to the clipper with two screws. With detachable blades the length of the hair is achieved by changing out the entire blade. With an adjustable blade, a range of hair cutting length can be achieved by adjusting a lever on the side of the unit. A typical length range for an adjustable blade is #000-1. Plastic attachment combs are available for both types of blades.
  • What is the difference between a trimmer T-blade and a square blade?

Knowing the difference between these two blades is essential when trimming hair. A T-blade's curved edges enable easy handling and better access for trimming around the ears, back of neck, beards and moustaches and cutting designs into the hair. For everything else and general shaving, a square blade is the perfect tool.

  • What is the difference between UltraEdge and other blades?
UltraEdge blades are long-lasting and dependable. These blades undergo a special hardening process and are finished in chrome to resist corrosion and keep them sharp.
  • Can I use aftermarket/other brand blades on my clipper or trimmer?

We suggest only using Andis manufactured blades on your Andis tool; they are designed and engineered specifically for that model to achieve optimum cutting performance.

  • How do I know which blades fit my clipper or trimmer?
The documentation that came with your clipper or trimmer will reference your blade's item number. If you cannot find it you can search by your tool's item number, model number or name on the Andis Blade Finder.
  • Are there any blades that can be interchangeable between human and animal use?

In the Andis detachable blade line there are several blade sizes that overlap between animal and human use. However, blades used to groom an animal coat should never be used on a human.

Care & Maintenance

  • How do I care for and clean and oil my blades?
Caring for your blades is essential in maintaining their longevity and cutting performance. Blades should be oiled after each use. If your clipper blades leave streaks or slow down, it is a sure sign they need to be oiled.
Start by turning off the clipper and removing fragments of hair from the blade with a clipper brush.
Clean and disinfect blades by using CoolCare Plus.
Use the 5-point oiling system to lubricate your clipper and keep it running at top performance: 3 drops across the teeth of the blade and 1 drop on each back rail. After oiling, turn on and let run for 5-10 seconds to disperse the oil. Turn off and then wipe off any excess oil.

  • How should I store my blades?
We recommend storing your blades in a low moisture environment to avoid corrosion. A padded blade storage case or pouch will help keep them safe and keep them from getting chipped or dropped which can break them or knock them out of alignment.
  • Why is it recommended that I oil my blades?
Blades are made of metal and oiling them will help reduce corrosion. Since the two metal blades rub against each other during operation, oiling them will also reduce friction thereby delivering better cutting performance. Oiling your blades regularly after each use is an important part ensuring your tool will cut and perform as designed.
  • What type of oil should I be using?
We strongly recommend you use Andis Company clipper oil which is specially formulated for Andis clippers and trimmers. However, other clipper blade oils will also work.
  • How often should I oil my blades?
We recommend that you oil your blades before and after each use. If your clipper blades leave streaks or slow down, those are signs that they need to be oiled.
  • Can I have my clipper and trimmer blades sharpened?
Yes, most Andis clipper blades can be sharpened at our factory repair center or at Andis Authorized Service Stations. However, because of the length of the teeth on trimmer blades we do not recommend that these be sharpened. Find a service center near you.
  • Where can I purchase replacement blades?
Blades can be purchased on our website or through your local beauty supply store.

Product Care & Maintenance

  • How do I sanitize and clean my clipper or trimmer?
First brush out any hair with a clipper brush (tool turned off). The blade can be cleaned by applying either Andis Blade Care Plus or Andis Cool Care Plus. However, only Cool Care Plus has a disinfecting ingredient.
  • How often should I sanitize my clipper or trimmer?
You should clean and disinfect your tools after each use.
  • What type of oil should I be using
We strongly recommend you use Andis Company clipper oil which is specially formulated for Andis clippers and trimmers. However, other clipper blade oils will also work.
  • Should I disassemble my product when cleaning it
Nearly all Andis clippers feature a sealed unit design therefore disassembly for cleaning is not required. However, tools with a 'snap-on' blade design may be removed to allow for more thorough blade brushing/cleaning.
  • How can I stop my blades from rusting?
Regularly cleaning, oiling and storing your blades in a low humidity environment will help avoid corrosion.
  • My Andis clipper is making a loud noise what can I do?
It may need adjustment to work with the line voltage in your area. To adjust (clean and oil your blade first), turn the SMALL power screw on the side of the clipper clockwise until the noise disappears. Learn more by watching our How to Adjust Your Clipper's Power Screw video.
  • Can my clipper and trimmer blades sharpened?
Yes, most Andis clipper blades can be sharpened at our factory repair center or at Andis Authorized Service Stations. However, because of the length of the teeth on trimmer blades we do not recommend that these be sharpened. Find a service center near you.
  • How long should a fully charged battery last on a rechargeable clipper or trimmer?
When fully charged, newer Andis rechargeable clippers with lithium-ion batteries will run for up to 2 hours. Clippers with Ni-Mh or Ni-Cd batteries will run for about one hour. Newer trimmers, on the other hand, when fully charged, will run between 20 to 40 minutes. To maximize the life of your trimmer battery, about every two months, run the trimmer completely down, and fully recharge overnight.
  • How do I take good care of my Andis hair dryer?
Andis Company hair dryers are easy to use and require little upkeep. If necessary, you can clean the outside of the dryer with a moist rag or sponge (when unplugged). The filter screen can be easily cleaned using a vacuum. Store the dryer by loosely wrapping the cord around its base and inspect regularly for cuts or nicks in the cord. Should you find any, discontinue use. Avoid getting the tool wet.

  • What should I do if my clipper or trimmer is accidentally splashed or immersed in water?
If your product comes into contact with water, we highly advise that you stop operating it to avoid serious injury. Unplug the device with dry hands first before handling it. Return the appliance to the Purina-Andis Authorised Service Centre for examination and repair.
  • What should I do if the cord is torn or damaged?

  • How do I properly dispose of batteries?
Batteries may contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel, which can be harmful to the environment when disposed of improperly. Some communities offer recycling or collection of batteries. Contact your local government disposal practices in your area. Upon removal, cover the battery pack's terminals with heavy duty adhesive tape. Do not attempt to destroy or disassemble battery pack or remove any of its components. Never touch both terminals with metal objects and/or body parts as short circuit may result.
  • Are the blades sharp enough to cut skin?
Andis blades are sharp. However, under normal operation Andis clipper and trimmer blades set at the factory should not cut the skin. However keep in mind that dropping or hitting the blades can knock them out of alignment and could result in nicking the skin. Always inspect your blades prior to use.
  • What are some steps I can take to keep myself and my product safe?
Always read your product's Use and Care documents. Using the product in a manner for which it was designed will ensure years of safe service.

Motors

  • What are the differences between magnetic, pivot and rotary motors?
The three types of motors used for clippers and trimmers are unique and are designed to perform best in different applications. Learn more about clipper motors.
  • What motors work best for what hair types?
For coarse curly hair, pivot motors are often preferred due to the higher torque they produce. Pivot motors also generally perform better on wet hair. Because rotary motors can be tuned to run at nearly any stroke per minute, especially high strokes per minute, they are often used on clippers designed for high-volume, heavy-duty use where bulk hair removal is required. Magnetic motors run at a high strokes per minute and perform best on dry, medium- to fine-textured hair.
  • What motors enable a cooler run time?
Of the three types of motors, magnetic, rotary, pivot. Pivot motors run the coolest.
  • What does SPM mean?
The term SPM means 'strokes per minute' of the cutting blade.
  • What does the speed and control mean on my clipper or trimmer?
If you purchased a professional hair product, on the back of the box there is a section denoting speed and control. Speed indicates how many strokes per minute the blade is cutting and Control is a general indicator of the power and torque the unit provides.

To maximize the life of your clipper/trimmer battery, about every two months, run the trimmer completely down, and fully recharge overnight.
  • What's the difference between a clipper and a trimmer?
Good question. A clipper is intended for bulk haircutting on larger areas, but does not cut extremely close to the skin. On the other hand, a trimmer is designed for edging, outlining, dry shaving and light shaping on smaller areas such as the back of the neck, around the ears, around sideburns, etc. On an animal, trimmers would be used on the paws, ears, muzzle and tight areas where it's hard to reach with the larger clipper blade. Generally speaking, a trimmer cuts closer than a clipper.
